Butler Eagle has an opening for an editorial writer. This is for experienced editorial writers.

We’re looking for someone to discuss issues in our fast growing county just north of Pittsburgh. We have major industries, such as Westinghouse; an independent hospital; farming; three state parks; two universities and a community college. There’s plenty to comment on in Butler County. The focus is on local and state editorials with a moderate point of view, but national issues also can be covered.

Position: Street Speech Newspaper Program Manager

Supervisor: Board Chairperson or Executive Director (if hired)

 

Job Summary

Responsible for production, distribution, and vending of the Street Speech newspaper for Columbus Coalition for the Homeless. The newspaper currently produces two issues of the newspaper each month.

 

Responsibilities

a) Newspaper Production and Editing – Creates, solicits, and edits articles, photos, and content for the newspaper. Helps people who experience homelessness develop ideas and write articles. Works with the community to create articles related to homelessness, poverty, jobs, healthcare, education, and other relevant social issues. Finds relevant content from national and international sources. Completes layout of newspaper in a timely manner.

b) Vendor Management – Recruits, trains, and supervises vendors who are homeless and formerly homeless individuals to sell the newspaper. Develops policies and procedures for vendors and newspaper sales.

c) Revenue Development – Secures advertising and other support for the newspaper. Researches grant opportunities and prepares grant applications with support from the Board of Directors and/or Executive Director.

d) Monitoring and Reporting - Prepares reports on sales, revenue, expenses, and vendor management. Provides a monthly report at Board Meetings.

Politics Reports (OH Based), The American Independent

The American Independent News Network, a nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization, seeks a reporter/blogger to cover Ohio politics for the national political news site, AmericanIndependent.com.

The successful candidate will closely cover labor issues of the day, with an eye to breaking stories and impacting the public debate. The individual will work with the TAI editor, in coordination with AINN’s national editorial staff. The reporter will be expected to produce at least 3-4 posts a day, featuring a combination of reported blog posts and longer-form (approx. 800-word) articles.

The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of reporting/blogging experience and will have an intimate knowledge of politics, players and issues within the state.  The position is on a three-month contract, with a possibility of renewal.

SCHEDULE:  Full Time  12:00pm – 9:00pm Flexible
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

1.)    Maintain the on-air image of the station through creation of topical news and entertainment promos, IDs and voice-overs.
2.)    Must be able to write powerful, factual, effective news promo copy quickly and with little supervision.
3.)    Create effective promotion which includes writing copy, selecting appropriate music and graphics and directing talent.
4.)    Attend daily news meetings working directly with news personnel to determine the best stories to promote.
5.)    Assist in the scheduling of promos, IDs and sales promotions on the daily logs of both digital and analog TV stations.
6.)    Meet with clients; write, shoot, and edit commercials; create graphics and present finished spots.
7.)    Manage station events including network casting calls, music festivals and community service projects.
8.)    Other duties as assigned by the Promotion Manager and/or Marketing Director.

EDUCATION/SKILLS REQUIRED:    Bachelor’s degree in communications preferred and/or successful progressive promotion experience in electronic media; News or Production backgrounds with experience in editing a plus.
